Borax is a borate mineral with the formula Na2B4O5(OH)4·8H2O. It is found in evaporite sediments in alkaline lake environments and as surface weathering crusts in arid regions. It is the primary mineral mined from Braun, California and nearby areas, and is the main source of sodium tetraborate. The word "Borax" comes from the Arabic word "bauraq" (white).
