Acetone, also known as dimethyl ketone, or acetone, or wood ketone, is the simplest ketone. Chemical formula CH3COCH3. At room temperature and pressure, it is a colorless flammable liquid with a mint smell.
Apply
Solvent: For example, the main (or only) component of polish remover is acetone. It is also a washing solvent commonly available in the laboratory.
Reagent: Acetone is synthetically a C3 synthon that can be used in organic synthesis. Acetone is also a protective precursor that protects 1, 2-diol, or 1, 3-diol, by producing ketones.
Coolant: A mixture of acetone and dry ice can be used as a coolant (−78 degrees Celsius).
